The Restricted Part 1 Certificate is designed to give you a fundamental understanding of the basic skills and requirements that will be needed to become a commercial diver. CDA’s Restricted Part One Certificate is the perfect starting point for any aspiring scientific diver, PhD student or underwater researcher.
At least 18 years old
- Divers must be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of training.
Recreational Diving Certificate
- Hold a recognised certificate of recreational diving competence (e.g. an open water sports diver qualification from a recognised SCUBA training organization, or a certificate as a military diver) and demonstrate logged evidence of at least 10 dives undertaken (40 preferred) since receiving certification and within 6 months of commencing the ADAS training course.
Current Commercial Dive Medical
- Before we can allow anyone to dive, they must hold an occupational dive medical compliant to the Australian Standard (AS) 2299.1.
- The doctor who assesses you for medical fitness is required to be trained in hyperbaric medicine and certified as an occupational diving doctor.

Current First Aid, CPR and Advanced Oxygen Resuscitation certificates
- To meet the AS/NZS 2299.1 and ADAS requirements anyone who joins a course at CDA, or any other ADAS school is required to have a current first aid, 02 provider and CPR certification.
- In general, if the card has First Aid on it, and the course was about a day long, it is likely this will be accepted. Though if you are not sure if your First Aid ticket is accepted, you can contact us any time to find out.
- If you are completing your First Aid, CPR or O2 course in Australia, you can check if the units are acceptable by checking this table.

The ADAS Part 1 Restricted course meets the standards of AS2815.6 – Restricted Occupational Scuba Diving.
Successful completion of this course results in partial completion of the following Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification: Certificate IV in Hyperbaric Operations (Surface-supplied diving to 50m). (National Qualification Code 10133NAT, awarded by Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS), Registered Training Organization (RTO) Number 88104).

For our courses on Orpheus Island, accommodation is an additional cost but is available at Orpheus Island Research Station for a fixed fee per course.
