Spectacular location for scientific divers

For scientific divers looking to complete ADAS Part 1 or ADAS Part 1 (Restricted), Orpheus Island in Queensland offers a spectacular training location.

The course covers all of the ADAS essential requirements, but also focuses on ‘small team ‘science style’ diving operations in open water and is structured to teach the management and practical skills required to safely work in such teams and environments. It is led by Simon Talbot, who served as Diving Officer at the University of Tasmania for 25 years and has over 40 years of scientific diving experience. Simon has been conducting ADAS courses for scientific divers since 2004.

CDA’s ADAS Part 1 and ADAS Part 1 (Restricted) training at Orpheus Island is specifically designed for students and scientists studying the underwater world, underwater researchers needing advanced SCUBA skills for their activities, divers in the media industry (photography and/or videography), and anyone else working outside the more standard ‘commercial diving style’ of diving operation (with tethered divers, voice communications and surface standby divers).

Struggling to decide whether to do the full ADAS Part 1 or just the restricted certification?

Although both courses focus on teaching students how to work safety and effectively as a member of an occupational dive team, and you will use both half masks and full-face masks and complete standard tasks such as underwater sampling and surveys during both courses, the full ADAS Part 1 course is longer in duration and gives students more opportunities to develop the thought processes, skills and techniques required for safe conduct of occupational SCUBA diving operations. There is also a greater focus on using tools underwater, which can be essential if that is something you may need to do for work after the course.

The full ADAS Part 1 qualification is also highly regarded (and often required) by many scientific consultancies and state government agencies. On the other hand, if you don’t intend to use tools much after the course, the ADAS Part 1 (Restricted) certification may be all you need.
